The day of Ashura is observed by Muslims all over the world to mourn the brutal killing of Prophet Muhammed (SAW)’s grandson, Imam Hussein (AS), and his family. It is an Arabic word that literally means the “tenth.” The day falls on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar.
On the day of Ashura, in the year 61 AH, Imam Hussein was martyred along with 72 of his companions in Karbala, Iraq. Shia Muslims all over the world remember his sacrifice on this day with sorrow and passion, as this day symbolizes a selfless stand against injustice and oppression.
